What an eventful Christmas 4 day weekend. Christmas Eve we finished shopping and cleaning and then Hank and Ginny opened a couple of presents each. Hank set out the traditional meat pie and beer for Santa. Corinna was arriving from Christchurch at midnight so Fa drove down to pick her up after getting Rachel. While she was doing that Santa arrived and dropped off some presents before sampling some of the beer and pie. Corinna and Rachel took over Hank’s room while Hank slept in Ginny’s. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=79060&l=d0493&id=543764697
Christmas morning we were up around 7:30. Ginny guarded the stairs until everyone was awake, not allowing anyone up. Finally we were all ready and headed upstairs. We all emptied our stockings. Corinna really enjoyed her first experience with Christmas stockings. We then we at the presents, finally finishing in about an hour or so. There were nice presents all around, of course. I then started cooking crepes, which we had with bacon, mushrooms, lemon, sugar, jam, and whip cream (not all together, of course). We were finished breakfast and enjoying our presents throughout the day. The favourite was probably the Rock Band game, which we played for many hours. By 4:00 I took myself away from Rock Band to start cooking dinner. I roasted a leg of lamb, which we had with kumara, mashed potatoes, salad, rolls, etc., the typical Christmas dinner, I guess. We finished dinner, but were too full for the pavlova we planned for desert. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=79098&l=9ee53&id=543764697
Boxing day we got an early start down to the Octagon for some movies. Hank and Ginny saw Twilight while Rachel, Corinna, Fa, and I saw Australia. Ginny and Hank approved of their movie and I think we all agreed that Austalia was entertaining, but had many flaws and was not great movie making. I’d give it a 6 out of 10. We returned some gifts and then walked back home in the great sunny weather.
Saturday I played squash with Phil and then we collected Rachel for a short hike to Tunnel Beach. Corinna and Rachel had never been there and we hadn’t for over a year so it seemed a great opportunity. As usual Tunnel Beach is fantastic to visit. We didn’t bring our swim togs, since it’s such a pain to carry all the towels and everything down and back, but it was still fun. We made our way back up the hill, down into Dunedin, picked up some food at the supermarket, and back home. We had a quick barbecue of pork, prawns, vegetables, and portabellos. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=79108&l=900c6&id=543764697
Sunday was nice again so we picked up Rachel on our way to St. Kilda beach. It was very warm and we played in the surf for more than an hour, pretty rare for Dunedin. We stopped for ice cream on the way back. Fa took Corinna to the bus stop for her trip back to Christchurch.
We’re finally getting back to normal after a great weekend, but now we’re suffering through a continuing heat wave. Yesterday it was sunny and 30C, and today it’s close to that. The locals say it’s the hottest they ever remember. We’ll see if we can get through this. Quite a contrast to the weather in Olympia!
