Sorry, it’s a bit late. Hank turned 9 last week. Unfortunately, we were all a bit ill on his birthday (30 July). Hank was just getting better and so made it to school, which was nice because in the states his birthday is always during summer vacation. That night we had a dinner of fresh smoked salmon pasta.
On Friday, we celebrated Hank and Rachel’s birthdays (30 July also) at Paasha’s Restaurant, our favourite in Dunedin. We had great food, as always, good cake, presents, and great conversation.
Saturday was the big party. Hank invited Robbie, Josh, Ben, Zac, Solomon, and Emma, and Ginny and Alycia were there also. It was 4 hours of playing computer games, DS, Gameboy, board games, and toys. We made home-made pizza and had another The Dessert Room cake. The kids had a great time. They were very well behaved and we all survived splendidly. Finally, after 4 days, Hank’s birthday was over.
Ginny had some friends over on Friday for her birthday. I made hamburgers for dinner
and they played games, watched movies, and then slept overnight. Surprisingly, they were asleep pretty early! The next morning I made omelettes and then we all went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We all had a great time!
Last night, on Ginny’s actual birthday, the four of us went out for Pad Thai. This was Ginny’s first time and she loved it. Then when we got home we had cheesecake with white chocolate and raspberry.
Today’s Ginny’s 12th Birthday. I couldn’t find a church around town wishing Ginny a happy birthday this year. I’ll keep looking, though. Happy Birthday Ginny!
Happy 42nd Birthday Gary!
Published 12 April, 2008 General , birthday , fishing , golf , rugby 1 CommentGary is celebrating a three day birthday this year with a trifecta (of sorts) of 1st – rugby on Friday night, 2nd – golfing on Saturday afternoon, and 3rd – fishing on Sunday morning. We had a terrific time at rugby Friday night, even though our team lost. My new company, eMedia, has a box at Carisbrook stadium, so Gary and I watched the Highlanders nearly win (aka lose) to the Sharks in comfort and warmth, Highlanders vs. Sharks. Rachel and Will stayed with the kids and they were snuggled up watching Goonies when we returned home (very cute!). Today we are going golfing with friends at Chisholm Golf Course and having everyone over for homemade pizza this evening. Tomorrow Gary is taking Hank out for a little fishing if the weather stays nice. Cheers
I got up at 5:00 AM to get some work done before Fa woke up. I made everyone omelettes for breakfast, then Fa opened her presents from the kids and me. Fa walked the kids down to school and then to her new job, while I finished my work. Fa called at 11:00 so I met her down at the fishing shop to pick up a gift for Jorit, who has the same birthday as Fa. We got a net for Jorit and the shellfish regulations for our day. We drove out to Aramoana and went to the beach next to the mole. We were looking for cockles (clams), but couldn’t find
anything there. We drove back to the harbour side of Aramoana and out onto the conservation area. We were just after low tide and so drove across the sand to the water’s edge. A few steps and we were digging cockles. In fact, it took less than half an hour to collect our limits of 150 each, including washing and counting a couple of
times. Then we drove back to Dunedin and stopped at the fish market for some green-lipped mussels. Then we went home to prepare for the party. A beautiful flower arrangement was waiting at the door, courtesy of Patria. At 3:00 I picked
up Hank from school and then at 3:30 Ginny. Cats were wandering in and out of the house all day, including Nova from up the street. We finished cleaning the house and I went to the supermarket for some final supplies.
People started arriving right at 6:00 and we started cooking the seafood. 6 pots later the cockles and mussels were done and mostly consumed. The
guests also brought some great food. Corinna and Rachel made a pavlova to go along with a carrot cake. Candles were lit and blown out, then presents opened.
Afterwards Grace came to babysit the kids while we walked down to play pool in town. We played for a few
hours, the first time in 25 years for both of us, and then back up the hill. Great birthday.
Hank had a nice birthday dinner at Paasha Turkish Cafe. Rachel’s birthday is on the same day so we had a double celebration. The food was great as always. I picked up a cake at The Dessert Room. It was very good – intense chocolat but not too sweet. Hank and Rachel got some great gifts. We all had a good time.

We have been celebrating Gary’s birthday for the last couple of days. We spent a wonderful afternoon at the book shop and then had a long dinner at the Reef, gorging ourselves on seafood. Today it was french toast for breakfast and nachos for dinner (you wouldn’t believe how difficult it can be finding Mexican food, but finally found all of the ingredients in the “International Foods” section). We had Hokey Pokey ice cream for dessert along with Ginny’s delicious chocolate chip cookies and a special cookie dough birthday cake.![]()
I have been studying for finals, but after our holiday I must admit my heart isn’t in it. I am taking the evening off (again) to continue our Kiwi film fest. We’ve seen Once Were Warriors and Goodbye Pork Pie so far and are just about to start watching Scarfies and Snakeskin. I made Gary watch Bride and Prejudice which isn’t Kiwi, but does have a Kiwi actor in it (although he lives in Oz now). I love Bollywood movies, but this was pretty bad.
Tomorrow I’ll really start studying in earnest! Cheers.

(Fa says…) What can I say, it was a great day! Gary and the kids had homemade cards and “Happy Birthday” written in Legos on the table when I got up to eat breakfast this morning. It was a wonderful (sunny!) walk to school listening to “Landslide” on my IPod. At school Melinda and the rest of the syndicate surprised Jorit and me by singing to us and giving us presents. I wish Financial Accounting could start with a song and gifts every morning. I was quite surprised in Marketing with flowers from my mum. They were beautiful and smelled fantastic. Thankfully we sped through our syndicate study group on Statistics so I could go and buy my birthday gift from Gary. We went to the perfume counter at Arthur Barnett and asked for something like my old fragrance, Anais Anais, but popular in New Zealand. The sales clerk recommended a French perfume and DKNY! I really liked the DKNY Red Delicious so apparently I have travelled ½ way around the world to New Zealand to buy perfume made in New York. Well at least I smell great, Thanks Donna.

Gary and the kids made a wonderful meal; it was lamb of course. We ate quickly, picked up friends Corinna and Zhao Ling (sorry for the misspelling) at the Biz School and dashed over to Jorit and Jennifer’s beautiful home for wine and desserts –Gary and the kids made the traditional Kiwi dessert of Pavlova and Jennifer had these fantastic pancakes and fruit. Marty (Canada/US) and German friends Lisa and Martin were also there. We topped it off with Lindauer Brut Sparkling Wine and a quiet ride home as the sun set. I couldn’t have picked a better way to spend the day. Cheers.
Our first try at Pavlova
An airshow appeared above our house right before dinner. I’m going to have to find out what that was all about.
Birthday dinner for Fa.
Lots of candles on the pavlova (32 for Jorit + 8 more for Fa). It was getting very hot and created a wee tornado above it.
After they blew out the candles there was a big cloud of smoke. I’m surprised it didn’t set off the smoke alarm.
