Fa got me thinking about fuel prices while doing her homework last night so I thought I’d do some comparisons. I buy diesel here in Dunedin at BP for $1.029/litre. According to http://www.WashingtonGasPrices.com, diesel in Washington is about $3.00/gallon (I couldn’t find any price for Olympia specifically). Petrol is $1.549/litre here just about everywhere. In Olympia it’s $2.95/gallon at the Safeway on Harrison.
Using today’s exchange rate at $NZ1.00 =$US.81
| $NZ/litre | $US/gallon | |
| NZ Diesel | 1.03 | 3.16 |
| NZ Petrol | 1.55 | 4.75 |
| US Diesel | 0.98 | 3.00 |
| US Petrol | 0.96 | 2.95 |
So diesel is about the same here and in the states but petrol is about 50% more.
However, diesel vehicles pay an additional road user fee of $0.30/km, which for our car probably works out to about $0.15/litre more than the above figures. I bought 10,000km back in March for about $300, so I’m good until 130,000km.
